“There’s something special about the drum that enables you to set up a foundation … for other people to play on,” a male voice says at the top of Robert Glasper Experiment percussionist Chris Dave’s new Drumhedz mixtape. “With the drums, you have the capacity to create mood.” Maybe that’s why rapper Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def) sounds so relaxed on “Live in H Town,” a quiet, percussive track from Dave’s forthcoming project. The song takes from a live performance in Houston and makes good use of an Eddie Murphy vocal clip; from there, Bey freestyles atop Dave’s tribal melody. “I’ve known him for a while,” Dave says of working with Bey. “If we’re both in the building, we know we’re gonna play each other’s shows.” The chemistry is evident here.
Dave’s Drumhedz mixtape arrives this Friday, January 18 and you can download it for free at his website. Stream “Live in H Town” below:Chris Dave - Live in H Town (Yasiin Bey Interlude)
