Tom Scharpling on ‘The Best Show’ Origins and Working on New Postal Service Videos

Tom Scharpling has amassed quite a career in many different arenas, including writing for Monk and as host of The Best Show on WFMU. Lately he’s also been co-hosting a weekly music podcast called Lowtimes and directing fantastic videos for the likes of Aimee Mann, Real Estate and Titus Andronicus. Which is why our ears perked up when he told Matt that he recently worked with the reunited Postal Service.

“I shot two things with them,” Scharpling says. “One is a mini-documentary, getting Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello to tell the story of how this weird band came together and how they were mailing each other CD-R’s back and forth. It’s a straight mini-doc thing that should be out shortly. The other is a funny video that takes place in 2002, that shows Jimmy auditioning potential lead singers for Postal Service. We got an amazing group of people to come through.” [Download and Subscribe via iTunes.]
