Texas producer Gensu Dean was home cooking one day when he decided to spin some jazz records. That’s when he heard a rock riff so aggressive that he wanted to create something similar. “I ran back to my studio where I had the door open in order to hear the music,” Dean recalls. “It was so hard and yet emotional. I stopped cooking, turned on the SP and got to work.” The result is “Chuck Berry,” a grungy single from Dean’s collaborative Abrasions LP with California rapper Planet Asia. “When I sent [the song] to him, he was instantly on it,” Dean says of working with Asia. “He then had the mighty Shawn Pen spit some fire to make it complete.”
