From the opening disclaimer alone, viewers of Kendrick Lamar and Drake’s video for “Poetic Justice” will feel a bit of suspicion and curiosity. “All characters in this visual are entirely fictional,” it reads, “the events that occur are purely symbolic and should not be taken literal.” The video starts out innocently enough, with slow-motion shots of polished Cadillacs and huddled dice games outside of a Compton liquor store. But things take a turn for the worst after a drive-by shooting claims two lives as Drake frustratingly tries to get in touch with one of the victims. Here, it seems justice is nothing more than a tragedy.
