Oscar Winner Paul Epworth’s Greatest Hits

Last night, when Adele nabbed the Oscar for Best Original Song for “Skyfall,” alongside her on-stage was producer/co-writer Paul Epworth. If you’re unfamiliar with Epworth, he’s been on the rise over the last 9 years in the UK as one of the go-to producers, with a resume that’s leaned more towards indie-rock acts with a post-punk edge rather than mega-stars like Adele. Next up? He’s been hard at work with Azealia Banks on her long-awaited debut, Broke With Expensive Taste. Here’s a rundown of Epworth’s five greatest hits he’s had a hand in over the years.

1. Bloc Party, “Helicopter”

Epworth produced the post-punk breakout act’s debut album Silent Alarm. “Helicopter” is pure angst and adrenaline.

2. The Big Pink, “Dominos”

Like Bloc Party, the Big Pink also embody that punk edge that was popular in the UK in the 2000s; the Big Pink’s sigle “Dominos” remains one of the catchier singles of the last half of the decade.

3. Florence + the Machine, ” The Dog Days Are Over”

Epworth struck indie rock/pop crossover gold with Florence Welch and Lungs. You’ve no doubt heard “The Dog Days Are Over” a billion times, but this shows a broader side to his work; a precursor to the grand arrangements that line “Skyfall.”

4. Annie, “Don’t Stop”

Though he only produced a handful of tracks on Annie’s 2009 album Don’t Stop, Epworth shows his knack for making fantastic pop music, as evident in the groovy rendition of the title track.

5. Adele, “Rolling in the Deep”

Honestly, an Oscar is just icing on the cake. The two winners teamed up for this massive hit, guaranteed to be heard at weddings, dentist offices and probably every other place you can think of for decades to come.
