Stream Applescal’s Remix of Fol Chen’s “200 Words”

On Fol Chen’s dark, sprawling single, “200 Words,” the Los Angeles band gets a gauzy remix, courtesy of Netherlands-based electronica producer, Applescal. The original song (which showcases the chilling vocals of new singer Sinosa Loa) hints at a long-ago suicide with its story song-esqe lyrics, a feeling that’s echoed in the dark electro beat of the ominous introduction and building drama of the six-plus minute track. But Applescal adds a layer of lightness to the levity, weaving in a choral explosion of brighter tones that peals off of the original jam’s darkness like light on a church floor. If “200 Words” unadorned is a jagged, edgy funeral dirge, this remixed version is the woozy, drunken aftermath.
