On Fol Chen’s dark, sprawling single, “200 Words,” the Los Angeles band gets a gauzy remix, courtesy of Netherlands-based electronica producer, Applescal. The original song (which showcases the chilling vocals of new singer Sinosa Loa) hints at a long-ago suicide with its story song-esqe lyrics, a feeling that’s echoed in the dark electro beat of the ominous introduction and building drama of the six-plus minute track. But Applescal adds a layer of lightness to the levity, weaving in a choral explosion of brighter tones that peals off of the original jam’s darkness like light on a church floor. If “200 Words” unadorned is a jagged, edgy funeral dirge, this remixed version is the woozy, drunken aftermath.
Fol Chen’s new album, The False Alarms, is out March 19 on Asthmatic Kitty. Stream “200 Words” (Applescal remix) below:Fol Chen - 200 Words (Applescal Remix)
