This week, house DJ Maceo Plex joins the ranks of the DJ Kicks club with his first official mix for the prestige series. The set is an explosive propulsion of syrupy grooves that aims to put a futuristic spin on the retro-’90s house vibe that a lot of DJs are reverting back to these days. Hive asked Plex what mixes he’s been enjoying lately and he obliged with these five. Seek them out.
1. Move D & Optimo – Boiler Room set, January 2013
Some sick tracks played by these guys. Move D is a legend in my eyes, and he’s still got it. Nice mixture of house and techno with some twists and turns but always enjoyable.
2. Tale of US, Renaissance Mix
Very nice flow to this mix. Super deep and a nice touch of darkness for the latenight hour. Good for a long car drive or at home with a glass of wine.
3. DJ Tennis, Live at Panorama Bar 17-2-2013
Great selection of music. Tennis is a great DJ at setting the mood, and he played Panorama Bar very seemlessly. Old and new jams but everything stays dark and imaginative.
4. Mr. G, Live in the Boiler Room November 2012
Awesome relentless grooves and even better dancing. He works that Mackie mixer and MPC flawlessly. Why? Cause Mr. G’s a gangsta.
5. Apparat, DJ Kicks
Prestine mix and production represented here. Apparat is an amazing producer and I can tell he selects tracks that are quality, hence the amazing sound in my studio.
Maceo Plex’s DJ Kicks is out April 30 on K7.
