Today, Azealia Banks, Paul Oakenfold, and Richard Benyon drop off “Venus (Ibiza Edition),” a hearty club track that blends easily into the mainstream dance music zeitgeist. Compared to her more recent singles, the Pharrell-assisted “ATM JAM” and Lil Internet-produced “Yung Rapunxel,” Azealia’s trademark aggressiveness is kept to a minimum here, as she swaps her typical braggadocio for lubby-dubby lyrics. (She even whispers seductively in French over certain parts of the buildup.) After Governor’s Ball in New York City, the Harlem rapper sent a tweet Kanye’s way, looking to defend her spot as the “one black screamo rap princess.” At this point, it looks like West might be making ground on her. Whereas Kanye leaned on industrial techno sounds on Yeezus, “Venus” is straight 130 BPM progressive house-festival fodder, filled with glittering piano lines, a repetitive low-end synth and huge builds and breakdowns. It would make sense for this track to be packed as a proper single or part of Paul Oakenfold’s Pop Killer, and not Azealia’s highly-anticipated debut album. Most likely it’s just a summer freebie.
