Prince is no longer living in 1999. Yesterday, His Royal Badness did the unthinkable: He started expressing his purple-splattered thoughts in 140 characters or less. Yup, that’s right, the “Purple Rain” singer made his Twitter debut yesterday, tweeting from the account of his band 3rd Eye Girl. That account has been in existence since January of this year, but Prince, apparently, hadn’t been tweeting via the account until about 15 hours ago, when he said: “PRINCE’S 1ST TWEET… TESTING 1, 2…”

Although he has been famously reticent about the Web and all its trappings — calling the Internet “over” and playing serious hardball with copyright claims, despite the fact that he was once a trailblazer selling music (in CD form, of course) online — Prince cottoned to the service pretty quickly, taking gleeful part in social media rights of passage like snapping pics of his food and sharing selfies. Naturally, he added his own “Prince” spin:

Prince also shared a link to a new track teaser, titled “Groovy Potential.”

The authenticity of the account and Prince’s tweets was confirmed by Twitter’s Tatiana Grace.
