The National throw the most ominously manic pool party ever in the video for “Graceless,” off of their sixth Studio album, Trouble Will Find Me.
The video, which was shot at Matt Berninger’s parent’s house in Ohio, sees the band — decked out in suits — splashing around in a pool, drinking copious amounts of beer and getting weird with potato guns and a bouncy castle. If you’ve ever seen Matt Berninger down an entire bottle of wine during a performance while still managing to murmur out every lyric with alacrity, you’ll recognize the tightrope walk between beauty and insanity in this video.
Shot in black and white, the gleeful — almost deranged — proceedings perfectly reflect the sedated desperation of the song’s protagonist, who seems to be bobbing in and out of madness.
Trouble Will Find Me is out now on 4AD.
