Even if you’re not a gamer, there’s a lot of like about “Grand Theft Auto V” — specifically the roster of bands contributing tunes to the game. A couple of names to get any music fan going? How about Twin Shadow, Flying Lotus, Kendrick Lamar, Neon Indian and Health — to name a very few. Chain Gang of 1974 was one of the plethora of bands to contribute a track to the franchise, the moody, thrumming “Sleepwalking,” and we have a behind-the-scenes look at the making of that jam courtesy of Kamtin Mohager himself.

“‘Sleepwalking’ was the first song I ended up working on for the new Chain Gang of 1974 record [Daydream Forever],” Mohager says in the exclusive commentary track embedded here. “After having taken over a year off from touring and writing just music in general I had to rediscover what this band is all about. So we went in the studio with some good friends and next thing I knew, a few hours later, the song was done and finished from beginning to end and it was a very natural process.”

Daydream Forever will be the followup to 2011′s Wayward Fire, and Mohager says “Sleepwalking” sets the tone for the album — “it created the essence of this new chapter of the band,” he says.

A song about  “the denial you have while you’re in an unhealthy relationship,” “Sleepwalking” appears in the trailer for “Grand Theft Auto V,” as well as on one of the game’s many radio stations.

Mohager says he was approached by Rockstar Games at Lollapalooza in 2011 about contributing a track to the “Grand Theft Auto” franchise. “The really cool thing is that I’ve been a massive fan of the GTA franchise since they started it,” he says. “So in all reality I took the opportunity and ran with it. Knowing how passionate the company is toward music and artists they work with, it really just made the entire experience so much more enjoyable.”

Daydream Forever is out February 4 on Warner Bros Records.
